Etienne Capoue, a Watford midfielder in the Premier League, was stopped in December of 2018 for driving over 115 miles per hour on the M25. Capoue offered the excuse that he was running late for a job. The M25 is one of the most used highways in Britain.
The Magistrates’s Court in Hertfordshire suspended Capoue’s license for 90 days. Capoue had a previous speeding conviction which did not help with his 116 mph charge.
Capoue had lost his license for approximately one month for a 53 mph charge in a 30 mph area in February of 2017. Capoue’s black Mercedes G63 was clocked this time at 116 mph in a 70 mph zone.
Capoue probably lost points with the court since he did not attend his 116 mph hearing due to an important training event. The Court stated: ‘We’re not very pleased with the situation, other people manage to take time off from work.’
Capoue’s barrister noted that Capoue’s youngest child was sick and he waited to the last minute before leaving for the mandatory training. He noted that the fine was 1,000 pounds per minute for being late. Counsel also noted that Capoue was driving his wife’s car, not the van he used to drop off his children at school.
